HMD 2010 A Song/Poem For Infants (Age 5-7)

(to the tune of The Grand Old Duke of York)

Note for teachers. The events of the Holocaust are too horrific to describe to small children but on 27th January they can share in the spirit of the occasion if you talk together about making the world a safer and fairer place. After all the seeds of discrimination, prejudice and unfairness, which lead to hatred and genocide are often sown when children are young. These simple verses help children to think about being kinder to each other and making their school a place where all are welcome. In this case you could talk about The Legacy of Hope as a promise made to send a gift of kindness into the future.

Our Legacy of Hope

We children know its right
To shout with all our might
When we see something that’s unfair
Change it because we care.

We’ll always welcome you
To join in what we do.
And no-one will be bullied here
So join us without fear.

And though we’re still quite small,
Together we stand tall.
Grown ups please hear our voice today
And act on what we say.
Here’s what we have in mind.
Let’s promise to be kind.
For kindness helps the world to cope
Here’s a Legacy of Hope.
