HMD 2012 Colouring Book for 4 - 7 year olds
The facts of genocide are not suitable for all age groups, but the lessons that come out of Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) can be understood by everyone.
Crimes of genocide occur when hatred is taught and accepted, and when people do not realise the differences an individual can make.
Everyone can learn something on Holocaust Memorial Day on 27 January, even if it is just to take a moment to reflect on what is happening in the world around us and what we can do to help others. On HMD it is good to remind people of all ages that we should work together to create a safer, fairer world where no one faces hatred and discrimination.
Young children can play their part on HMD by colouring these posters and decorating their classrooms. The pictures help to make children familiar with the symbols of HMD and illustrate some of the basic messages of the day.
When the children have coloured the posters display the work on classroom walls and in windows or peg them onto ribbons strung across the room or hung from the ceiling.
They might be used to start a discussion on hope and what can be done to support this year’s theme of Speak Up, Speak Out, or as a stimulus for the children to draw their own pictures on the theme.
The pictures were inspired by a famous poem The Butterfly.
In your posters the butterflies represent freedom and hope.
