The case studies and related education resources for HMD2010, The Legacy of Hope, have been archived. The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust is currently focusing on the theme for this year, Speak Up, Speak Out.
HMD 2010 ICT and Maths Task (Primary)
This could also be incorporated into a primary maths lesson. This task uses the Ben Helfgott case study and links to the Primary Assembly. for HMD 2010. The class taking the assembly could carry out the research and display their findings using ICT.
Tell the students how computers are useful tools for getting messages across to groups and individuals.
Challenge them to use their own ICT skills to see how teachers and students have reacted to the story of Ben Helfgott used in the HMD assembly.
Share the story of Ben and his Dad, and explain that you are going to use it in a special assembly for HMD on 27th January.
Explain that Ben would like to know how people feel when they hear his story and what they want to do. We can gather information which would help Ben to see how people react to his message.
Discuss how technology is always developing and there are now quick and excellent ways to share information. Ask students to tell you which ICT tools work best when trying to make sense of information.
Ask students to suggest questions which can be given to people after the assembly. The questions should have simple answers on a five point scale. You only need four or five questions. The following are examples but it is better if the students write their own.
Put the questions into a table to make them quick and easy for people to answer. See an example on the next page.
