    • Thinking about the Treatment of Roma & Sinti - a lesson for Citizenship (Primary)

      A Citizenship lesson for primary students with a focus on the Nazi persecution of Gypsies. Students will also reflect on differences between people and on fairness in society.

    • Stolen Childhoods - Citizenship Lesson (Primary and Secondary)

      This lesson is based on Denise Affonço’s story, with an extension project on Ben Helfgott’s experience. It has been produced in partnershop with EveryChild and can be adapted for Primary or Secondary students. It also works in Humanities (Geography) classes.

    • Special people and a special day; an art based assembly (Primary)

      This is an interactive assembly for primary students which uses pictures from the Ben Uri art collection to encourage everyone to think about special people in their lives today and to remember those who were separated from people they loved. Students are asked to join the Legacy of Hope by creating a postcard portrait of a person they love and to linking it with a message of hope and friendship.

    • Dance Activities (Primary)

      The complete outline of a movement and dance workshop for primary students linked with the Legacy of Hope. It contains ideas to help your students to explore related themes of “Loss” (of freedom), “Hope”, “Equality” and “Strength and Survival”.

    • A Song/Poem For Infants (Age 5-7)

      These simple verses help children to think about being kinder to each other and making their school a place where all are welcome. In this case you could talk about The Legacy of Hope as a promise made to send a gift of kindness into the future.

  • Secondary

    • Stolen Childhoods - Citizenship Lesson (Primary and Secondary)

      This lesson is based on Denise Affonço’s story, with an extension project on Ben Helfgott’s experience. It has been produced in partnershop with EveryChild and can be adapted for Primary or Secondary students. It also works in Humanities (Geography) classes.

      This lesson links with the case study on Ben Helfgott. It encourages students to think about Ben’s achievements and his contribution to society. It shows how Ben rebuilt his life and asks students to reflect on his Legacy of Hope.

    • Laws: Then and There - Now and Here

      A lesson for secondary students, created in partnership with Stonewall and linked with The Mosaic of Victims case study, which provides the opportunity to explore the legacy of institutionalised homophobia which existed in Germany during the Nazi regime and to contrast and compare it with the situation of Lesbian, Gay and bisexual people in Britain and other countries in the past and present.

      Students are encouraged to examine how legislation has changed over time and to reflect on the hopes of those who suffered during the Holocaust and discuss how far we have come to realise these hopes in present day society, as well as considering what there is still left to do.

    • Inhuman Treatment and Homophobic Bullying

      A lesson for secondary students, created in partnership with Stonewall, linked with The Mosaic of Victims case study which provides an opportunity to explore the legacy of institutionalised homophobia which existed in Germany during the Nazi regime and to contrast and compare it with the situation of Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual people in Britain and other countries in the past and present.

      Students are encouraged to examine how attitudes towards the Gay community have changed over time and to reflect on what still needs to be done to create a more inclusive society.

    • An Historical Enquiry for History Students (Secondary)

      A set of enquiry questions and work cards linked with Denise Affonço’s story and additional questions for a Holocaust based enquiry. This enquiry can also link with activities in Citizenship/PSE and may be used with Post 16 groups as part of a research task.
